In such a site as Howard Smith Wharves, the need for an intriguing and invoking space is greatly apparent. The current site is by all means a wasted space within Brisbane, it possesses a disconnection from its surrounding context, inhabited only by those passing through to get to another destination. The concept behind the folie was to activate the space and attract people to Howard Smith Wharves, and provide them with a space to retreat and recharge from the ‘hustle and bustle’ of city. The space created offers a unique and intimate place for relaxation and reflection.
Integration with the site is evident with the folie physically attaching itself between the supporting arches under the bridge. This location offers an elevated viewpoint of the CDB’s riverside, Captain Burke Park and along the New Farm cliff face. It is proposed that several of these installations be constructed with the Howard Smith Wharves area to offer multiple viewpoints of the city and of the proposed redevelopment of the site.
Through the use materials such as aluminium, timber and glass panelling, the folie’s appearance doesn’t assault ones senses, it proves a calm, harmonic place to unwind and enjoy the serene qualities of the river front. The form of the installation is inspired by the structural framework of the Story Bridge above, striking interest within the visitors of the site. The folding form wrapping around the stairway draws the user upwards to the outlook platform where the space opens and frames view of the riverfront.
The aim of this proposal was to enhance the site and provide users with a unique space to stop and appreciate the city in which they live in.
