Final Presentation

Final Renders

Approaching the site from the east. The shell of the building seems to rise out of the ground and crawl up the side of the cliff.

A view from the top of the cliffside walkway. This walkway connects the top of the cliffs to the HSW site and provides another view point of the CBD and the HSW

Creating an open parkland for recreational activities and also for people to relax in was a main priority with the landscaping design.

Aerial View of the approach from west site (from the CBD). The large open park is shown with the SHW Retreat and  new City cat terminal shown in the background.

View of the cliffside walkway connecting the site to the top of the cliff (via the under bridge walkway). The glass panels in the shell house the indoor pool.

Morning shot of the retreat as the sun rises over the cliffs. The bikeway in front of the building allows people to walk and ride through the site uninterrupted, Why pedestrians can easily enter the retreat via the front stairs or duck into the cafe through the bottom glass doors.

As visitors enter the building, they are greeted by the main reception foyer. A combination of natural and warm artificial lighting creates a comforting and welcoming atmosphere.

(picture won't insert into blog)

The view from the bedroom of the residential unit. As the owner lies in bed, they are able to see the CBD  'framed' by the archway of the bridge. The bedroom and unit offer the user a retreat of their own to relax and take in the beautiful view of the surrounding city.

A large living room and kitchen have sweeping views of the HSW site and riverfront CBD.

Daytime shot of the upper indoor pool. The frosted glass panels  enclose the space, letting in diffused light and offering some privacy from the outside world.

The indoor pool again, but at night highlighting the illumination of the natural rock fact .

Final Drawings

 Final Plan Drawings.

Site Context Plan showing the proposed HSW Retreat and adjoining park.

First Floor. Cafe on the bottom, and the entrace/foyer at the top of the stairs. Behind the reception s the offices for staff and a private elevator for the owner to access the residential unit.

Second Floor. Accessible from the main staircase in the foyer, the second level is home to the gymnasium, several beauty spa rooms compelte with massage tables, spa baths (2 rooms have views over the site and the city, while the other 2 have water features which flow down the exposed rock walls in room). The outdoor lap pool is accessible through the main walkway past the gym.

The top levels consist of the indoor lap pool (up the main stairs) and the residential unit which is accessible by only the owner through a private elevator.

Longitudinal section of the building showing the different rooms and scale  of them.

North-South section showing how the building sits in the cliff and compares to the Story Bridge. Also the glass structure which encases the upper pool.
Front elevation of the building and the shell which hugs the cliff face to the top of the site.

Project 3

Approaching the end of the project I have begun the rendering process for the interior and exterior perspective views.
Trying to get these renders right takes a lot of time and requires multiple 'test' renders to be done, especially with the night-time shots as getting the lighting correct can take several attempts and tweaks.

Below are some of the test renders I did trying to perfect the shots.

Bathrooms. Created a custom benchtop and sink. This render was to see how the materials turned out and also the check if the mirror was reflecting properly. Probably wont use this render in final presentation.

Quick (did take over 30 mins though) render of the walkway trying to get the downlights and frosted glass materials to appear correctly. Had to do about another 10 renders to get this to come out how i wanted it to.

Playing with different materials for the exterior of the building. This stone/brick design, while interesting, is just too busy for the tone i want to set for the building. I think I'll go back to the just simple white rendered concrete.

The reception foyer during the day time. I feel although this is a nice render, in order to convey the mood and atmosphere of the building, this render needs to be at nighttime with the lights turned on.

The same foyer render but with the downlights on the rock face turned on and I added the "howard smith wharves retreat' sign on the wall to welcome guests as they arrive. I still think this render has too much natural light in it, so I'll probably turned the sun off and crank up the artificial lights to create a better mood.

master bedroom looking through the archway. I plan on inserting an image of the CBD riverside to give this view better context.

Reasonably high quality render of the residential unit. Render turned out far too dark with only natural light turned on. I'll need to go back and insert some interior lighting to brighten up the space. Also lowering the brightness of the outside so you can see the view of the Riverside and HSW park.
Indoor heated pool shot of the natural rock face and the shadows created by the glass and concrete 'shell'

Indoor pool again but at night time. I added the upligts to the cliff face to accentuate its texture and make it into a feature wall.

Thats it for most of my progress test renders. Hopefully over the next few days I'll get all my final renders completed at a high quality ready for the presentation on Thursday.

Project 3

Update of my Project 3 progress using Revit.

Starting to create a mass model for my exterior shell to attach to. Using the sketch I did during class as a starting point, This shell wraps itself around the top floor and hugs the cliff face. The highlighted blue area is where the indoor lap pool will go.

While editing the mass model. I add these edge lines all over the face to create a triangular grid, so that when i attach/create a curtain system to the mass, the mullions of the system will align themselves to these triangular lines. I had to individually draw these lines from corner to corner of each square for the entire shell. Very time consuming process but its the only way to get the desired effect.

With the new shell create. I altered its path to connect to the top of the cliff, underneath the Bridge. There is an existing walkway that goes under the bridge so my vision is that the walkway ontop of my shell (highlighted in orange) will connect my site./building to the top of the cliff and provide both another access point but the opportunity for users to view the site and city from another perspective.

This is a plain material render showing the basic form of my building the shell that works its way up the cliff. Next step is to attach the curtain system to the shell to get the triangular effect.

Assigning different materials to the curtain system i was able to achieve this look. The majority of the shell is a grass-like material so hopefully it will look like the shell is an extension of the topography. The white parts are concrete and form the walkway. These rest are glass panels which allow light into the indoor pool area.

A screen-grab of the interior of the indoor pool. This shows how the space looks with the 'wrapping shell' encasing it. The glass panels will allow light to enter the space and creat some interesting light forms.

Continuing the aesthetic of my shell. My ferry terminal has a similar shade structure to it.

I have finished (pretty much) my residential interior space complete with furniture and casework in order to get an idea for how the space is laid out and the scale of it. I will try and render it over the next few days.

For the master bedroom, i found this really cool 3d model of a queen bed, complete with pillows and doona. I really like this kinda of model because it just adds another layer of depth to the final render image. Obviously I'll have to the change the materials of both the floor and bed to give it a nicer look.

Over the next few days I'm started to get into the rendering process as most of my rooms and spaces are nearing completion.
